I've been asked about this quite a bit, so I figured instead of repeatedly answering it each time I'd just put up a general explanation :)
How you spell Clique really depends on how long you've been a fan. Back in the early days, the boys were just a group of friends that traveled together and hung out together. As time progressed, they all rose to the top tier in the WWF and were said to have had a large amount of creative control over their own storylines, as well as great influence concerning the storylines of other WWF superstars. It was during this time that some of the dirt sheet writers began referring to them as a "clique" of guys that were only looking out for their own interests and doing everything they could to hold everybody else down.
And so the Clique was born. Throughout 1995 and part of 1996, this is what the boys were called and how it was spelled. I may still have some old magazines from back then that document this, so I'll see if I can find any and scan a couple of articles. No promises, though. It was a long time ago lol
The Kliq came along in late 95/early 96, when HBK began his quest for the WWF title. I attended a couple of live shows during that period of time, and let me tell ya, to this day I haven't seen a crowd response that would rival the ones he got back then. It was during this period that he began calling the fans his Kliq. It caught on like wildfire, and the signs started appearing at arenas. The Kliq Kam was born, and the rest is history lol.
So why does Scott Hall wear tights that have "Kliq" on them?
Well, as everybody knows, soon after HBK won the title at Wrestlemania 12, Kev and Scott both jumped to WCW, with Sean Waltman soon following. For all intents and purposes, the Clique ceased to exist. You didn't hear much about the boys as a group for about a year and a half.
Then one night in late 97, during a confrontation between the Hart Foundation and DX, Shawn Michaels resurrected the phrase on a live Monday Night Raw. Bret Hart made a comment about how he'd run their friends down south. HBK responded with, "Do not confuse expansion with destruction. The Clique owns this business!"
By this time the *attitude* era was beginning, and the WWF had picked up a lot of new fans. Obviously, the newer fans would have no way of knowing the history behind the name or the history of the group itself. So the decision was unofficially made to use the Kliq spelling.
As time progressed, there were more references made to the group. After HBK's injury and subsequent retirement, Triple H took over DX and ran with it. The night after Wrestlemania 14, Sean Waltman returned to the WWF as X-Pac. When Hunter introduced him, it was a stirring moment. He talked about starting an army. He said when you start an army, you turn to your friends, you turn to your blood, you turn to "The Clique!" Sean made his way to the ring and delivered a blistering speech in which he claimed Kev and Scott were being held to contracts they wanted out of in WCW, and if it weren't for that they'd be standing right there with them. They even went so far as to invade the CNN Center in Atlanta, GA one night on Raw in an attempt to free their friends from the clutches of Eric Bischoff. Of course this was all an angle, and Kev and Scott stayed in WCW.
Time passed, and in early 2001 Vince McMahon purchased the failing WCW. A year or so later, he resigned Kev and Scott, and this time they came in using their real names. Scott began wrestling at house shows wearing tights that sported the word Kliq on the back. He's still wearing those tights even now in NWA.
So there you have it :) In the beginning, the group was the Clique. When this site started out as a sub-site on the Unleashed server, my intention was to take the fans back in history to the beginning. That's still my intention, and since in the beginning they were the Clique, that's why the site name is spelled the way it is.
